Autistic Children in Less-Privileged Countries Deserve Quality Education Like Every Other Child
Meet Tornye Korku Gagli, an adorable 5 -year-old boy who was diagnosed with autism at age 3. He currently resides with his mother in Accra, Ghana. He is an intelligent little boy who loves singing, attending school and helping his mother with chores.
Tornye’s father has never been a part of his life, leaving his mother to raise and care for him single-handedly. Tornye’s special needs, coupled with his father’s absence, have brought a lot of hardship and financial strain on him and his mother. The high cost of special needs education, the lack of special needs childcare, and the high price of therapeutic services in that part of the world have rendered this family helpless.
Tornye attends special needs school (Awaawaa2+, Dansoman, Accra, Ghana), which he loves so much, at a monthly cost of GHC1275 (equivalent to 158 US dollars). Unfortunately, he is on the verge of being deprived of access to school as his single mother can no longer keep up with his tuition. To say the least, being out of school as an autistic child at this prime age will not only be detrimental to his development but will also devastate him as he sees school as his safe space and looks forward to going there every day.
